In Mount Pleasant, history isn’t erased—it’s embedded in the murals and signposts. Once a working-class stretch, its now a mix of breweries, vintage shops, and cafés. The edges are still rough, but you can feel the future creeping in, for better or worse, depending on who you ask.

Amanda Niekamp

Raised in a family of artists, art has been Amanda’s language since childhood. She first expressed herself through intricate Ukrainian Easter eggs, sketching horses, and drawing for her mother’s office. For the past 15 years, she has worked in Mount Pleasant, immersed in a neighborhood that has shaped her sense of community and creative identity. A recent residency in France deepened her focus, intertwining travel, memory, and architectural elements to ground her work in a richer narrative of place and structure.

“The backdrop to many pivotal chapters of my life.”

"Managing Vancouver Special for more than a decade, I’ve seen the neighbourhood change. Some spots fading, others holding on. My piece is an invitation to experience the heart of Mount Pleasant, and connect with a place that’s as much about what remains as what’s new.”
